What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to emerge, typically sprouting sometime in early adulthood. These teeth are thought to have been useful for our ancestors who often lost many of their teeth by this time, but in the modern day, they’re largely unnecessary.

Most people have four wisdom teeth and will see them emerge at the very back of the mouth. However, some people are born with three, two, one, or none at all.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

Wisdom teeth are not necessarily a problem in themselves, but can sometimes cause serious oral health problems that warrant their removal. Wisdom teeth can put pressure on other molars, causing overcrowding. They can also be harder to clean and therefore develop infections at a much higher rate.

Impaction, swelling, and even cysts can also be associated with the emergence of wisdom teeth. If you notice anything strange as your final molars show up, it’s worth bringing them to our attention so that we can determine the necessity of removal.

What to Expect From the Wisdom Teeth Procedure

In the simplest cases, the process of removing a wisdom tooth is the same as any other. First, we numb the mouth to make sure that you’ll be completely comfortable throughout the duration of the procedure. We’ll then use a tool called an elevator to gently lift the tooth out of its socket, then forceps to wiggle it out of position.

If your wisdom tooth is impacted a surgical intervention may be necessary. In the case of especially complicated procedures, we will connect you with a local oral surgeon who will be able to complete the process.

Recovering From Wisdom Teeth Extraction

In the days after a wisdom tooth extraction, you’ll likely experience a little bit of swelling or bleeding. These should fade within a day or two after the procedure so long as you don’t irritate the extraction area. You might also be a bit sore, which can be dealt with via taking over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribed medications as directed.

In the days after the procedure, most patients adhere to a soft food diet. We can give you recommendations for how you can handle it when we meet. You should also do what you can to avoid dry socket—avoid using straws, smoking, or doing anything that can cause suction.

If you have any questions about aftercare, or any other component of the wisdom tooth extraction, make an appointment with us today!
