What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are small caps that are designed to fit over the teeth, giving them additional stability, strength, and beauty. They’re versatile enough to be used for a variety of purposes, whether it’s holding broken teeth together, repairing them after a root canal, or helping patients to deal with purely aesthetic imperfections in their smile. The procedure is safe and simple enough to be used for patients of all ages and in any state of oral health.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

First, the tooth is prepared for the dental crown by removing small portions of enamel to make room, as well as treating any decay or disease affecting it. We’ll then take an impression of this tooth and use that to design your dental crown, picking its color and shaping it to fit your smile.

These designs will be sent to an external lab where the restoration will be milled to fit these specifications. The tooth will be covered with a temporary crown until the permanent one is completed, some weeks after the initial appointment. At this point we’ll meet you one more time to put the dental crown in place.

Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Someone with a nice smile

If damaged and disease teeth are not treated, they’re likely to only get worse with time. Infection may spread and breakages could increase in size, causing more severe oral health problems as time progresses.

Dental crowns can reverse this, protecting the tooth from further damage while improving both your comfort and chewing ability. These restorations will also be modified to fit your smile perfectly, so much so that most people will be unable to tell that you’ve had any dental work done.

Dental Crowns FAQs

Are Dental Crowns Permanent?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are cemented over an injured tooth or implant to restore your smile’s appearance and functionality and are not intended to be removed. Plus, for it to fit correctly, our team must remove a small amount of enamel from the underlying tooth which doesn’t regenerate. That means being fitted with your prosthetic involves an irreversible change to your grin. As a result, many people consider them to be ‘permanent.’

However, they aren’t intended to last forever, so it may be more accurate to refer to them as a long-term solution. They may require repairs or replacement after years’ worth of wear and tear from daily use.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

On average, you can expect your dental crown to last anywhere from 5 to 15 years, but it depends on a few factors. For instance, restorations containing metal might last longer because of the more resilient material, though the difference is often negligible. Also, a prosthetic placed over a front tooth might last longer than one covering a molar because it sustains less pressure from biting and chewing on a regular basis.

Your dental hygiene habits also significantly impact your crown’s longevity. It cannot develop cavities itself, but the tooth it’s covering can develop tooth decay or gum disease that erodes your enamel or connective tissues. This can leave your new tooth without a firm enough foundation and it can be injured or dislodged.

How Do You Know When Your Dental Crown Needs to Be Replaced?

You already know your dental crown isn’t likely to last forever, but how do you know when you need a new one? The only way to know for certain whether it’s time is to undergo an examination and imaging with our team. There are several signs that let you know it’s time to schedule an appointment, including:

  • Discomfort. If your dental crown hurts, the underlying tooth likely has developed a problem that needs to be addressed. Our team may have to remove it to assess the damage before we can reseat or replace it altogether.
  • Instability. If it starts feeling loose, especially when eating something sticky, the bonding material may have eroded. We’ll need to examine your restoration to verify what is needed to mend it.
  • Worn appearance. Your crown is made of durable materials that resist damage and discoloration, but they can start to look worse for wear after years of daily usage. If your prosthetic is faded, chipped, or cracked, it may be time for a replacement.

Does Getting a Dental Crown Hurt?

Many people experience anxiety when it comes to dental appointments, especially if they’re having a restoration placed. It’s natural to worry that it might hurt if you’re unsure what to expect. Thankfully, being fitted with one of these restorations is not usually considered a painful process. First, our TimberRidge Dental team will numb the area with a local anesthetic to help you feel at ease. We can also administer a sedative for patients who are overly concerned, have a sensitive gag reflex, or struggle to sit still for longer periods.

We must remove a thin amount of enamel from your tooth for the crown to fit over it correctly. You might develop sensitivity after your appointment due to this preparation, but the sensation is temporary and typically fades on its own after a few days. If you experience persistent or severe aches, contact us immediately so we can ensure everything fits as intended.
